Soldier worship blinds Britain to the grim reality of war

A Royal Marine's murder of a wounded Afghan in his custody lays bare the truth of military campaigns

With the official Remembrance Day ceremony closing in, and soldier worship about to hit its tedious annual peak, the public have been given an unexpected glimpse of war's unsanitised face. A Royal Marine has been convicted of murdering a wounded Afghan in his custody. Two marines were acquitted.

While the public has for 12 years been told otherwise, the Afghan occupation is not simply a case of good guys and bad guys. Nevertheless, tired references to "bad apples" will now flow. The Ministry of Defence will repeatedly and frantically highlight the supposed "good work" the troops have been doing in the smoking ruins of Afghanistan. A stock statement will be released by the MoD about military values and high standards of behaviour. Allegations of law-breaking, they will tell us, are investigated thoroughly and can result in disciplinary action up to and including court martial, discharge and prison. And all of this will obscure rather than address the issue.

From the outset this episode has been written through with the brand of self-delusion that has come to typify the "good war". The original arrest of seven marines in 2012, following the discovery of footage on a laptop, sparked an indignant Facebook campaign to "Support the 7 Royal Marine Commandos arrested for murder in Afghanistan". To date, it has attracted 63,000 "likes". If nothing else, this highlights how a section of society can leap to the defence of servicemen long before the facts are known.

It is my view that Royal Marine commandos are the best light role infantry in the world – bar none. Bootnecks, as they are colloquially known, are capable, professional and robust soldiers. But I can say all this without once gushing about "heroes" and without ever once needing to shy away from an uncomfortable truth simply because it happens to concern soldiers.

We should not feel compelled to point out that those brave men and women are fighting in Afghanistan to secure our safety every time the military is mentioned. First, because it is not true that they are; and second, because such blustering at the merest glimpse of camouflage clothing is an obvious and embarrassing capitulation to dogma.

The question at the core of this is not how we can most tastefully play down criminal acts carried out by the services. The question we ought to be brave enough to ask is: why is there such surprise when atrocities occur? There is a belief in moralistic sections of the political left and the more dumbly macho sections of the political right that soldiers, as a rule, relish killing people. Both sides are wrong – a trained killer does not equate to mindless robot.

To understand why an occupying soldier turns to vigilantism and murder, we can do worse than look at their daily experience, which can never be divorced from the over-arching political context. Killings like this most often occur when soldiers have lost a comrade or comrades. They lose comrades because they are in a war. Killings like these can reasonably expected to be carried out by all sides in any conflict.

What radicalises soldiers then is not too far from what radicalises lone wolf killers, terror cells and drone strike orphans: the impact of policy on an individual and the people you care about. Marine A, now convicted, was a 39-year-old senior non-commissioned officer. He had done six tours of Afghanistan as an infantryman. He is likely to have experienced countless engagements and lost various friends in a failing war. This does not excuse his actions, but why should he and his fellow marines' callous attitude to death, shown in the transcripts of the helmet camera recording of the event, be a surprise?

When a political decision is taken that puts men who are primed for violence into a war, bad things will happen. This is another reason to make sure that war is the very last resort and not, as in the case of the post-9/11 wars, something that is engaged in lightly, in a spirit of hubris or in the pursuit of narrow interests.

At its core, this is a problem at the political level, which can only be resolved or avoided at the political level. It does not diminish the responsibility of the killers to say the issue is more complex than bad apples letting the side down. The culture of irrational and uncritical soldier worship serves only to blind us to the realities of war and occupation – and this contrived, blinding effect, I have long suspected, is rather the point of lionising the military.

BRITISH OCCUPIED IRELAND URBAN DICTIONARY DEFINED SCUM STATE

1. British Occupied Ireland
Irish: Tuaisceart Éireann sometimes in British slang, known as Norlin Airlann or Norlin Airlan, it is militarily occupied by the British and is a neo-colony in the north-eastern part of the island of Ireland. As of 2011, its population was 1,810,863 constituting approximately 30% of the island of Ireland's total population.

Officially known as a British Scum State, it was created in 1921, when Ireland was partitioned on a sectarian headcount by an act of the British parliament. It was partioned after the Irish General Election in 1918 where the vast majority of the island of Ireland voted for independence from Britain Historically, it s marked by sectarian discrimination, internment without trial, ethnic cleansing, human rights violations and British state terrorism.
Are you part of the Solution or the Problem? Indymedia ireland
Lethal Allies a book on British Government Collusion in the sectarian murders of ordinary innocent Irish people in British Occupied Ireland is written by leading journalist Anne Callwallader and produced by the Pat Finucane centre focused on the ethnic cleansing of the Glenanne Gang which still operates in Ireland.

The book documents members of the British police and the British Army who were part of this gang which murdered hundreds of innocent people, particularly in the 1970s, operating primarily from loyalist farms in counties Armagh and Tyrone.

Yes we can trade different perspectives on the bloodletting of British Occupation and neo-colonialism in Ireland until we the cows come home but the solution is not on that path. If you are sincere about peace then you don't have to be particularly bright to see where the solution lies, it's not rocket science.

Internment without trial is an instrument of War not Peace.

1. Scum State
A Police State without basic human rights and extreme injustice, with secret courts, secret evidence and secret sentences, that executes lawyers and journalists.
As in states such as British Occupied Ireland, where there is no rule of law, because it is overruled by an unelected British Viceroyal. There is no right to a fair trial in the instance of Martin Corey for example people are politically interned without trial. There is no due process, in fact there is no process at all, the British Viceroyal overrules any process, setting aside basic standards of universal justice. It is a British neo-colonial Scum State where British police and the British Army murder innocent people, operating from loyalist farms.

BRITISH US CONCENTRATION CAMPS READY AMERICA Jesse Ventura

Closed Material Procedures (CMP) have already been used in ordinary civil cases in Britain, on the instructions of the USA while British invented concentration camps are being prepared for ordinary Americans and British commoners within the special relationship, between the UK and US secret government. The process already has Royal Assent from April 25th earlier this year.

It is just a matter of time, before secret courts are the norm across all of the Britain, after being first tested on Irish guinea pigs in the political laboratory of the Scum State of British Occupied Ireland. Closed Material Procedures or “CMPs” means that the accused or their lawyers cannot take any part of their trial. The British government and its lawyers however are allowed to be present during the CMP.

a)
The commoner's lawyer cannot be present

b)
The commoner may be told if they won or lost but not why.

c)
The commoner cannot see the evidence the government is relying upon which is said to be national security sensitive information,

d)
The commoner cannot know the government’s case or their evidence,

e)
The commoner cannot challenge the evidence or the government’s case

In a democracy the individual is called a citizen but in the British monarchy, they are her majesty's property and are known as a British commoner. British Occupied Ireland is known as a Scum State for the reasons mentioned as follows, in the Urban Dictionary :

"1. Scum State
A Police State without basic human rights and extreme injustice, with secret courts, secret evidence and secret sentences, that executes lawyers and journalists.

The commoner may be told whether they have won or lost, but not the full reasons why. Brigadier Frank Kitson's recommendation to blend sociological 'normalisation', political policy and legal elasticity is currently operated in the Scum State of British Ocupied Ireland already. He recommended the Law and the Courts to be used as just another part of the British Army's arsenal. He advocated:
"The Law should be used as just another weapon in the government’s arsenal, and in this case it becomes little more than a propaganda cover for the disposal of unwanted members of the public. For this to happen efficiently, the activities of the legal services have to be tied into the war effort in as discreet a way as possible."

Currently the best known example of several internees of the secret courts the British Scum Sate, is Martin Corey. On the 9th of July 2012, Judge Treacy ordered Martin Corey’s immediate release from political internment, stating his human rights had been violated. This was overruled by the un-elected English Viceroyal, who ordered the internment of the Irishman, against whom there is no evidence of wrongdoing, that could possibly lead to charges in an open court of law.

However secret evidence, in secret courts, that neither the his defense or the general public have a right to access has secretly convicted him. This evidence has been provided by the British secret service MI5, who were involved in gun running, the murder of lawyers Pat Finucane, Rosemary Nelson and colluded in the ethnic cleansing hundreds of innocent Irish civilians, as documented in the war crimes of the recently released book, Lethal Allies.

TERRORIST SCUM STATE BRITISH COLLUSION "TRULY SHOCKING"

The level of British collusion with loyalist terrorists was “truly shocking,”Dr Alasdair McDonnell told his SDLP party’s annual conference yesterday.

‘In over three and a half years that Martin Corey has been imprisoned not once has he been questioned by the police or his legal representatives shown the alleged evidence against him" Jennifer McCann

As the Richard Haass talks on the past, flags and parades comes to its crucial stages Dr McDonnell said it was critical that the legacy of the Troubles was addressed on an ethical basis.

“Central to that healing process is uncovering the truth about all killings and securing answers and a measure of justice for all victims and survivors,” he said in the Armagh City Hotel conference centre.

“That collusion is truly shocking but it never ever justified a single IRA atrocity. And the IRA must come clean and tell the truth as well,” he said.“That includes getting to the truth of the appalling British State collusion with loyalist murder gangs that takes on a more sinister character with every new disclosure,” he added in relation to the recent collusion disclosures in the book Lethal Allies.

“And no IRA atrocity can ever justify unionist politicians dismissing collusion. Such talk is not just insulting to victims and survivors. It’s insulting to the hundreds of honest RUC officers who hunted down loyalist killers as well as IRA killers and brought them to justice,” he added.

“With a little more help from each of you we will confound the critics and baffle the cynics,” he exhorted.

Dr McDonnell said people feel “very badly let down” by the two main parties. “The DUP and Sinn Féin are the parties of disappointment, false promise, poor government, bad politics - and no results. They have had their chance and they have failed the test,” he said.

Dr McDonnell said “after thirty years of murder, abuse, and suffering our battered society is crying out for healing and reconciliation”. The SDLP’s core values were reconciliation, social justice and prosperity which were “central to rebuilding faith in politics, and trust in politicians and delivering worthwhile benefits”.

He defended the SDLP’s decision to support limiting the flying of the British union flag over Belfast City Hall which triggered disorder from last Christmas. “As Irish nationalists we make no apology for regarding the tricolour as our national flag. We believe that the Irish tricolour, emblems, symbols, and language should be given parity of esteem,” he said.

Dr McDonnell added, “Last December, Belfast City Council arrived at a sensible compromise, to fly the union flag on designated days, a decision that was supported by the SDLP. It is unfortunate that unionists cannot do compromise.”

He said there must be a comprehensive approach to addressing matters of political and cultural identity such as emblems, symbols, languages and memorabilia. “The British and Irish Governments must be the co-guarantors of any agreement emerging from the Haass Talks .

They must be fully engaged in any outcomes and exert the power and influence for a sustainable solution,” he said.

“The needs of victims and survivors must have priority in this process especially the voices of those victims that have been silent for too long such as those families of the Disappeared profiled so movingly in a recent documentary,” he added.

Dr McDonnell called on the Northern executive and the British and Irish governments to support the creation of a formal “prosperity process, a mini Marshall Plan” to underpin politics and the peace process.

Provisional Sinn Fein MLA Jennifer McCann has said the continued imprisonment of Lurgan man Martin Corey for over three and a half years is a breach of his human and legal rights.

The West Belfast MLA was speaking after she and party colleagues met Justice Minister David Ford concerning the case.

‘In over three and a half years that Martin Corey has been imprisoned not once has he been questioned by the police or his legal representatives shown the alleged evidence against him’

Martin Corey’s two and a half year wait for the Parole Commission is due to take place on Monday.

Jennifer McCann said:

“In over three and a half years that Martin Corey has been imprisoned not once has he been questioned by the police or his legal representatives shown the alleged evidence against him.

“Martin Corey was released on bail but the British Secretary of State interfered and had the Lurgan man rearrested. This is a violation of Martin Corey’s basic human rights and his continued imprisonment is an affront to natural justice.

“Along with MLAs Raymond McCartney, Rosie McCorley and John O’Dowd we met the British Secretary of State Theresa Villiers over Martin’s Corey’s continued imprisonment.

“It is well past the time that this man be released and this injustice ended. He, like everyone else, should be entitled to due process under the law and anything less is a breach of his human and legal rights.”

Counter gangs was a product of 1970/71 policy set by Kitson. This was possibly the main contributing factor to the length of the conflict.

More evidence that not only was Northern Ireland a failed state but was also rotten and corrupt at the core with police men aided and abetted by UDR and Loyalists murdering innocent civilians while their colleagues turned a blind eye and a judiciary condoning their activities.Congratulations to all concerned in publishing this very important book Lethal Allies that shines a light on the Northern Ireland's state's dirty war on it's own people.
