He left home during the War of 1812 and married Harriet Smith (1800–1867) (Cambridge, New York, May 12, 1800 – Cincinnati, Ohio, June 21, 1867), the daughter of Dr. Sanford Smith (1760–1815) (Stonington, Connecticut, February 27, 1760 – Scipio, New York, June 15, 1815) and his wife Priscilla Whippo Smith (1763–1838) (Cambridge, New York, c. 1763 – Pottstown, Pennsylvania, August 26, 1838), in Rochester, New York on November 8, 1821. He and his wife had seven children. After two years of toiling in California he began passage home, by ship, to retrieve his family in New York. He died, however, aboard ship and was given a sea burial. According to the book The Faith of George W. Bush: "[He] left his home during the War of 1812, became a schoolmaster, then caught gold fever and left for California during the Gold Rush of 1849. Two years later, he tried to return home to reclaim his family and take them west. He died in the attempt, though, and was buried at sea. leaving his wife and seven children alone in Rochester, New York."[citation needed]

The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Family: The Real Story of the Bush Dynasty is a supposed non-fiction book by the American investigative journalist Kitty Kelley. It was published on 14 September 2004, less than two months before the 2004 US Presidential election. Kelley was widely attacked in the media for the book, with charges of partisanship and challenges to her credibility.[1]
[edit]Synopsis
The Family received attention due to its allegations that George W. Bush snorted cocaine with his brothers at Camp David during his father's presidency. One of Kelley's sources for the cocaine allegation was Neil Bush's ex-wife Sharon Bush, who has since denied telling Kelley the story. Kelley claims that Sharon Bush told her the story in front of a witness and has recanted due to pressure from the Bush family.[2]
The book also claims that in college Laura Bush was "a go-to girl for dime bags of marijuana," Barbara Bush objected to the fact that her son's girlfriend's stepfather was Jewish, and that at Harvard, George W. Bush objected to a classroom viewing of the filmThe Grapes of Wrath by asking "Why are you going to show us that Commie movie?" and saying "Look. People are poor because they are lazy."[3]
Glynn Wilson, a free-lance journalist from Alabama, sued Kelley for plagiarism claiming passages from the book have the exact wording as his on-line article.[4]
